Update Menubar Icon to Indicate Nambu State
I've noticed that, when launching, Nambu will show that I have unread tweets via the status bar icon, but that it is impossible to bring Nambu to the front because it is still downloading the tweets. This may not be an issue for anyone else with a faster machine, but on my iBook G4, I sometimes have to wait while Nambu finishes whatever it's doing in the background, and recognizes my click on the status bar icon.
Other times, I wonder if Nambu is actually working, because I sometimes go for long periods of time with no tweets delivered (turns out, my tweeps are just enjoying a lull in tweeting, but that doesn't keep me from wondering).
Sometimes, Twitter is having problems, and the only way to find out is to bring Nambu to the front, to read the "request timeline failed" message.
What I propose is to add the following colors/animations to the status bar icon, to indicate what's going on with Nambu (it's status, imagine that):
Black: There are no unread tweets, and everything's fine as of the last update check.
Red: New tweets have arrived.
Spinning "n" inside the speech balloon (either red or black): Nambu is polling Twitter for updates.
Flashing status bar icon (either red or black): an error with Twitter has occurred.

Inappropriate?I am not sure this is such a good idea. For the third state, an error with Twitter's API, it would always be flashing. Errors back from Twitter are pretty much constant throughout the day, and you would just end up turning it off, or then asking for the option to turn it off. The progress indication would also be spinning constantly once you had more than a few accounts.

Inappropriate? All this activity would be distracting, but I would like a subtle menu bar icon indicator of user-customizable activity. This is one of the things Tweetie does well—you can have its menu bar icon change color only when you have new @replies or DMs. This gives peace of mind that you're not missing something important without having to be distracted by the app.
Any chance of adding this functionality? In the meantime I often run both Nambu (for general use) and Tweetie (for the menu bar alert). -
Inappropriate?I think that two states would be good. The original black where no new tweets. Turn it blue for new tweets. While I hate a lot going on on the screen, that would not be distracting. That same thing happens with waveboard and works very well.
