Use Icons w/o Titles for Outline View Sections
User icons instead of user names in left column - same for Mentions, sent, Groups, search, etc.

Inappropriate?how would this work for icons for groups as there is only one icon for them? I need to see the name of groups to make sense of them
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?I wouldn't really care about that, it would be worth the sacrafice to me.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?I think we need to preserve text for the outline view, for the most part. Using the icon does not save any space since we need to leave the group names in there, and in fact we lose some because the vertical height increases for a decent size of the image.
I will leave this under consideration for now, but I dont see us doing much here, simply because we dont really gain anything for not showing the descriptions, and we have too many features on the way that will become part of the outline view selections. New users wont know what the icons mean.
This works in a few other popular implementations that use only icons in an outline view because they are essentially featureless clients, whose outline view only has 4 very obvious options. -
Inappropriate?I get that. Thanks for the response. I hope you can get the product to a point where you might have time to spend on optional features like this. I would certainly use it, at the sacrifice of having text view. Why would any of the icons need to be taller than 16pixels?
Thanks again for participating here.

I dont think an icon that is 16x16 adds anything. People simply wont know what they refer to. -
I think you underestimate a mid-level Nambu user. I'm very accustomed to the icons now and would not hesitate to switch to an icon only layout simply for the savings on space if I had the option. But either way, I get that there are more important things to work on that will benefit more users.
It's not really about what the 16x16 icon adds but by the space a user can save on a small screen by taking away the 80px or so occupied by the text. -
I agree that having it be an option to hide the text next to the icons would make for a more efficient outline view.
