Cannot Upgrade to Latest Versions
I'm on the private beta, and it shows an update available. It downloads, extracts, and then when I try to install, it errors out with "An error occurred while installing the update. Please try again later."

Inappropriate?Hmmm, can you try this again for me?
-
Inappropriate?Sorry if I wasn't clear -- I'm using the Update function within Nambu. This shows an update available, which it then downloads, but when it goes to install, it fails with the above message.
So the problem isn't running the app in general, but trying to update to the newer version that the app tells me it has available.

Can you try it again? -
Inappropriate?Did, still failed :(.
-rob. -
What version are you starting the update from? -
Inappropriate?1.9.0.5b. I originally tried the 6b upgrade, and now the 7b. MacBook Pro running 10.6.1.
-rob. -
Inappropriate?ahem ...hopefully i check this website, and learn there is a beta ;-)
i have checked the option "uatomatically check for updates" and "update to beta when available" ...but the last check was 29th of august ! :s
I’m confused

Inappropriate?Update: I checked console, and found this:
9/14/09 7:09:49 AM Nambu Desktop[5171]
Sparkle Error (continued): Couldn't find an appropriate update
in the downloaded package.
-rob. -
Inappropriate? No joy with this latest update (1.9.0b8), tested on two different 10.6.1 Macs. Trashed prefs, update still refuses to install.
Hard to provide beta test feedback if I can't update.

Inappropriate?I'm seeing the same issue updating from 1.9.0.5b to 1.9.0.8b under Leopard (10.5.8). The following errors are in the console:
9/15/09 10:08:02 PM Nambu Desktop[10047] Cannot create NSData from object <null> of class NSNull
9/15/09 10:10:06 PM Nambu Desktop[10047] Sparkle Error: An error occurred while installing the update. Please try again later.
9/15/09 10:10:06 PM Nambu Desktop[10047] Sparkle Error (continued): Couldn't find an appropriate update in the downloaded package.
I also reported this as a separate bug (http://getsatisfaction.com/nambu/topi...), sorry for not checking first.</null>
I’m frustrated

Sparkle is a giant black box in some ways. Get the latest update here. http://tr.im/yPwg and let me know if this problem continues going forward. -
Inappropriate?Update from Nambu 1.9.0.5b (185) to 1.9.0.8b via Preferences > Updates > Check Now failed with the following error dialog:
Update Error!
An error occurred while installing the update. Please try again later.
[Cancel Update]
I tried it twice with the same result, then quit and restart Nambu and tried again, again with the same result. Is there any way to get more diagnostics about what went wrong? Is there any other way to get the new version?
This is on OS X Leopard 10.5.8.

Inappropriate? This can be difficult to track down, especially for those earlier betas. Please grab the latest version here -- http://tr.im/yPwg -- and let me know if these problems continue on newer versions.

Inappropriate? The problem continues to occur when upgrading from 1.9.0.8b to 1.9.0.9b.
This message appears in the console:
9/16/09 6:39:45 PM Nambu Desktop[13150] Sparkle Error: An error occurred while installing the update. Please try again later.

Can you download a new version and start fresh? I have no idea what this is. I have never had a problem upgrading in the many tests of Sparkle we have done. -
Eric, this problem occurred using 1.9.08b downloaded fresh from http://tr.im/yPwg. Is there anything else I should do to clear out the old version, like deleting the database? -
This is very frustrating. On my 10.6 spare laptop, if I clean everything out -- database and prefs -- download 1.9.0.8b and run it, it upgrades clean without a problem.
It should not make any difference, but clear out your prefs file and the Nambu Application Support directory and start from 1.9.0.9b and see what happens on the next update. -
Inappropriate?I've installed the latest beta fresh, and I guess I'll wait and see what happens with the next update.

Inappropriate?I figured out what was causing the problem, for me anyway. I had renamed the app to "Nambu 1.9.0.8b.app", leaving the last official release as "Nambu.app" (my wife's using that one, I'm testing the Beta). So "Nambu.app" was in use, while "Nambu 1.9.0.8b.app" was the one that should have been updated. This fails.
I have discovered through additional testing that if I make a copy of the Nambu beta in a temporary directory, it updates itself fine as long as it is named "Nambu.app". But if I rename it to "Nambu 1.9.0.8b.app", the update fails.
I have changed my app management strategy so that instead of renaming Nambu.app to indicate that it is a Beta, I have created a "Nambu Beta" subdirectory in Applications and put the Beta in there as Nambu.app. I bet that will permit the updates to succeed going forward.
So that fixes the problem for me, anyway. You can consider this a still-open bug that Nambu will not update itself if the app has been renamed, but it's much lower priority (as long as you mention it in the release notes).
Where are the release notes, anyway? I see them when a new update is available but haven't found any way to view them, within the app or online, at any other time.
I’m embarrassed
-
Awesome. Yes, you cannot rename the application bundle name and expect Sparkle to update itself.
Honestly, we will never bother spending any resources on reworking Sparkle to deal with this. The Sparkle guys may however, and that would be great, but it is beyond the scope of Nambu. -
Inappropriate? This was caused by renaming the Nambu.app application bundle to something other than Nambu.app. Nambu cannot update itself if you do this.
The company and 1 other person say
this solves the problem

Inappropriate?I couldn't run 1.909b from within Nambu. Got an error after hitting relaunch and the only choice was to cancel the update from there. Running it under Snow Leopard on an Intel mini

Inappropriate?Renaming the binary fixed the problem. However, you wrote about the cause as:
"Honestly, we will never bother spending any resources on reworking Sparkle to deal with this. The Sparkle guys may however, and that would be great, but it is beyond the scope of Nambu."
Sparkle is perfectly happy to install updates for a few of the other betas I'm involved with -- and in all cases, I've renamed the app to have "_beta" after the name, as I did with Nambu. Only Nambu fails to update, which makes me think it's not a generic Sparkle issue (as I doubt the other devs have spent any time customizing their code for renamed apps, either).
Regardless, I'm just glad I can update :)

Inappropriate? After finding the thread on this issue, I also fixed my updates by renaming the file back to Nambu.app. However, I never renamed the file to begin with. I didn't realize the beta version had the same app name, so when my mac downloaded Nambu 2, I thought that the "2" was purposely a new name for the app, not that mac appended the 2 because the new file was a duplicate of an App I already had installed. I'm new to macs, so maybe that's obvious to experienced users.
I’m better now
-
Glad you resolved it. Yes if you are running Nambu from your downloads folder, for example, extracting another copy of Nambu would cause OS X to do this. However, you may want to move Nambu to the Applications folder. In that case when you copy another version in there it will ask about replacing it. -
Inappropriate?Every time I try to install the update 1.9.1.3b I get a failed message immediately, I'm updating from 1.9.0.6. Is there any log I can check to help debug this?

I merged your other thread to here. You renamed the application bundle? -
Inappropriate?Yep, I moved the new Nambu beta to my Applications folder and renamed it back to Nambu, left my existing 1.0.2 Nambu in the downloads folder so I can still run both.
After renaming the file the beta was upgraded successfully. Thanks for the attention Eric!
I’m better now
